How Should I Care for Cut Flowers in a Vase?
- make sure you use a clean vase
- cut the bottom of each stem at a diagonal, with a sharp knife, this enables the flower to take up water when it is sat on the bottom of the vase
- make sure that there is no foliage below the water line
- change the water every couple of days for fresh, clean, cool water
- keep your flowers out of direct sunlight
When you buy cut flowers in a wrapped bouquet, you will often be given a little sachet of flower food. This will contain food for the flowers and an agent to kill bacteria, which is usually a bleach.
You can feed your flowers if you like by adding a little bit of sugar to the water and a tiny bit of vinegar to kill bacteria. Really, you don’t need to do this though, if you follow the instructions above your flowers should be perfectly happy.
